The Canyon Riddle

I answer every question you shout across a canyon,
but I only ever use your own words.
I have no mouth, no body and no opinions.
What am I?
💡 Hint

It is a sound that comes back to you a second or two late.

Reveal answer

An echo.

An echo is your own voice bouncing off a hard surface and returning to your ears. It “answers” every question with exactly the words you used, it has no mouth and no body, and it never adds an opinion of its own. Canyons are famous for echoes because their tall rock walls reflect sound back over a long distance, which creates a clear delay between your shout and the reply.

Did you know?Sound travels at roughly 1,100 feet per second in air, so if a wall is about 550 feet away, your echo comes back in about one second. That is why a small room does not echo the same way: the reflection returns so fast that your brain blends it with the original sound. Riddles about echoes are popular because they turn a bit of physics into a character with a personality.

About This Puzzle

Imagine standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon on a quiet morning. You shout a question into the air, and something answers. This riddle asks you to name that something.

How to Think About It

Notice that the riddle never says the thing is alive. It talks back, but only by repeating. Think about what happens physically when sound hits a large rock wall. The canyon is not just scenery in this riddle; it is part of the mechanism.
