The Footsteps Riddle

The more of me you take, the more of me you leave behind.
What am I?
💡 Hint

You probably took a few thousand of them today without counting.

Reveal answer

Footsteps.

Every step you take leaves a footprint behind you. The more steps you take, the longer the trail you leave. The riddle works because your brain expects “take” and “leave” to be opposites, so it searches for an object you collect. Once you read “take” as an action, the contradiction disappears and the answer is right there under your feet.

Did you know?Riddles built on a fake contradiction are some of the oldest in the world. They set two words against each other (take vs. leave, more vs. less) and let your instincts do the misleading. A good trick for any riddle that sounds impossible: list every meaning of the verb before you start guessing nouns. It works surprisingly often.

About This Puzzle

Some riddles feel impossible for ten seconds and obvious forever after. This is one of them. Read it slowly, picture yourself doing it, and see how fast you get there.

How to Think About It

Riddles like this play with a word that has two meanings. Here the tricky word is take. Most people read it as “grab and keep,” but the verb also works with actions: you take a breath, take a nap, take a walk. Ask yourself what you can “take” that also leaves a trace behind you.
